FeNO tests

Find out with FeNO logoEvery GP surgery in Lewisham now has FeNO testing devices on site and, if you book a GP appointment, they can arrange one and may find out if you have asthma in a matter of minutes. The test can be used on anyone over the age of 5..

All you need to do is blow steadily into a tube and the FeNO device will measure the level of nitric oxide gas in your breath.

If the level is on the higher side, it’s likely that inflammation caused by asthma is present. If not, the doctor can rule out the most common types of asthma and, if you have symptoms, look into other causes.

Asthma can be deadly. If you or a loved one are experiencing any of the following four symptoms shown below, don’t ignore the four! Speak to your GP about a FeNO test as soon as possible:

  • A tight chest
  • Night-time coughing
  • Breathlessness
  • Wheezing

Before your FeNO test, please make sure that for at least an hour beforehand you:

  • Do not smoke or vape
  • Avoid caffeinated, alcoholic or hot beverages
  • Do not do any strenuous exercise

You should also avoid foods like green leafy vegetables (e.g. spinach, lettuce, celery) and beetroot for at least three hours before the test.
