About the service

The Trust provides a comprehensive school health service for children and young people in the borough of Lewisham.

In Greenwich, school health services are provided by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust.

The School Health Service works with children and young people aged 5 to 19 in the local community both in school and out of school. The service aims to help children and young people achieve optimum health through engagement with schools and families.

The service is led by community public health nurses, who work alongside parents, families and other healthcare professionals to promote health and wellbeing. The service provides confidential advice and guidance on a range of issues including safeguarding children, immunisations, nutrition, exercise and healthy living.

The School Health Service is comprised of four teams that work collaboratively with other community services to provide public health initiatives, advice and support to school aged children and their families.

Services available

Screening and universal service

All children starting school (aged four to five) receive vision and hearing tests from the school health service. They are weighed and measured under the National Childhood Measurement Programme in reception and again in year 6 (aged 10-11).

The school health nurse will review any children at school entry with health needs and create a care plan with parents to be shared with school staff.

The team assesses and promotes the health needs of vulnerable and young people.  The team leads on the health aspects of child protection. They also work with schools to support children and young people whose school attendance is affected by a safeguarding or child protection health concern.
