Sign along with us for World Down Syndrome Day!

One of our trainee paediatric doctors has organised an online show of support for World Down Syndrome Day (which this year is Sunday 21 March 2021) that we’d love everyone to get involved with if they can!

Dr Shilpa Ambulkar, who has a son with Down Syndrome (pictured), is looking for healthcare colleagues to join her on Zoom in singing the ‘Greatest Showman’ track ‘A Million Dreams’ in the sign language of Makaton – a language commonly used by people with Down Syndrome to increase their communication and help their development.

The lyrics’ signing is made up of simple, easy-to-perform gestures – just follow along with Singing Hands UK’s video version of the track, or use Dr Ambulkar’s simplified version. You can keep the video running while you go – and please wear your uniform!

Dr Ambulkar said: “I’d be so grateful to anyone who is able to join us as we raise awareness and celebrate our friends and family with Down Syndrome.

“I’ve run signing events at other Trusts, and they are always a fun and uplifting occasion – not to mention a great way to get introduced to Makaton or sharpen up your skills!”
