Remembering Hunter

The Bearman family from Sidcup recently visited Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) to donate a cuddle cot to the Emergency Department and toys to Safari Children’s Ward in memory of their son, Hunter, who sadly died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) on 1 January 2026 at just three months old.

The family chose to make the donation on what would have been Hunter’s first birthday, 30 September 2026, as a way of remembering their son and giving something back to the hospital staff who cared for them during the most difficult time of their lives.

For the special visit, Hunter’s mum and dad, Brittni and Jake, were joined by his nanny Emma and grandad Kevin, as well as his two brothers, Ollie, aged four, and Teddy, aged nine. Special thanks also go to Nanny Sharon and Grandad Barry, who couldn’t be there today, and to Hunter’s uncle Tommy, aged nine, who couldn’t be there but specially chose the toys for the ward. The family all wore special blue jumpers in Hunter’s memory.

Brittni and Jake spoke about the care they received at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, describing the staff as compassionate, kind and supportive.

Brittni Bearman, Hunter’s mum, said: "We came here today to remember our son, Hunter, on what would have been his first birthday. He passed away at just three months old.

“We wanted to give something back to the hospital that cared for us and to donate a cuddle cot to the Emergency Department, as well as toys for Safari Children’s Ward.

“The cuddle cot was really important for us to donate. We hope it will help other families who sadly experience the loss of their baby, giving them that precious time to spend with their child and say goodbye.

“We especially want to thank Dr Jessica Thomas, Paediatric Consultant. She was brilliant. She was there for us when we needed her, and she has continued to support us. She went above and beyond for our family. All of the children’s staff were amazing at the hospital.

“I’d also like to thank all my family and friends who have been there for us and helped raise money for the cuddle cot.

“And finally, to my boy, happy first birthday Hunter. You are forever loved, forever remembered.”

A cuddle cot allows bereaved parents precious additional time with their baby, helping them to create memories, say goodbye and spend time together as a family.

Dr Jessica Thomas and Robert Cole, Head of Nursing Children and Young People Nursing, met with the Bearman family to thank them personally for their generous donation.

They explained how the cuddle cot was needed in the Emergency Department and how it will help support other parents and families facing the devasting experience of losing a child.
