Prostate cancer healthcare assistant wins employee of the month

Congratulations to Jenny Hughes, who has been chosen as our Employee of the Month for September. Jenny works as a healthcare assistant in the Urology outpatient clinics at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Three separate colleagues nominated Jenny for her inspirational work. Their comments included: “Jenny is one of the most professional and dedicated staff members who supports the prostate biopsy list on a weekly basis. She always goes above and beyond to take care of our patients with suspected prostate cancer, who are sometimes quite vulnerable and nervous. Jenny takes the time to chat to them and reassure them in order to keep them calm throughout the treatment. She also follows up with the patients the next day to check on them.

“Patients and their families always comment on how supportive and calming Jenny is and how she makes the experience less stressful for them.

“Her dedication to the service and her patients was made even more apparent more recently. I found out that she had arranged her summer annual leave in such a way that she is available every Monday (prostate biopsy day) so that the service can continue to run smoothly.

"She consistently shows her positive, hard-working and supportive attitude, which makes her an incredibly valuable asset to our team."

Leighane Bartlett, Service Manager for Urology at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, congratulated Jenny and presented her with an Employee of the Month certificate and a fruit basket donated by Hasan Er who runs the fruit stall at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

A shocked Jenny responded: "After working for the Trust for 28 years, it is really nice to know that I am still appreciated and that the work I am doing is making a difference to our patients."

Barry Pollard, Patient Experience Officer who helped chair this month’s judging panel commented: "We found that the supporting statements from three different colleagues described Jenny’s work as above and beyond her role. Jenny has shown a real commitment to her work throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond. She has shown dedication to patients by putting them first and supporting her colleagues with her good attitude. We were unanimous in our decision to select Jenny and wish to pass on our congratulations for a job well done."
