Professor Andrew George MBE appointed as Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust Chair

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT) today announces the appointment of Professor Andrew George MBE to its Board as Chair.

Professor George will join the Board and become Chair on 1 November 2026, replacing Dr Nav Chana MBE who has been interim Chair of LGT since July 2026 when Mike Bell left the organisation to focus on his role as Chair of West and North London ICB.

He brings with him a wealth of experience of healthcare and the NHS, having spent much of his career as an academic immunologist in both the UK and the USA. He now specialises in healthcare, education and ethics, for which he was awarded an MBE in 2017.

The LGT Chair role will complement Andrew’s existing portfolio, which includes Chair of the Health Innovation Network South London and Chair of Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. His appointment will help to strengthen relationships and partnership working and improve patient outcomes across Bexley and Greenwich where both organisations provide care.

Commenting on his appointment, Andrew said: “I am delighted to be returning to my roots in acute care by joining LGT as its Chair. The Trust has made much progress in the last five years, and we share an ambition to drive better patient outcomes through partnership working at the heart of our communities. The synergy between what LGT and Oxleas both deliver for their patients in Bexley and Greenwich is apparent. Some 90% of patients cared for by LGT at Queen Elizabeth Hospital go on to receive community care and support from Oxleas, so my distinct involvement in both organisations makes sense for both trusts and their patients.”

Ben Travis, LGT CEO, said: “This is a stellar appointment for LGT, and we look forward to working with Andrew on the next phase of our strategy to deliver exceptional care for our patients. Supporting healthier communities is one of LGT’s top priorities, alongside delivering timely access and quality care. Andrew’s appointment will support the efforts LGT and Oxleas are already making to work more strategically across acute and community services in our shared patch. We can’t wait to welcome Andrew to Team LGT.

LGT thanks Dr Chana for his stewardship over the last few months. From 1 November 2026, he will revert to his previous role as Vice-Chair and Non-Executive Director on the Board of LGT.

Professor George has been appointed by NHS England to his role as chair of Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust in addition to his incumbent role as Chair of Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust.
