November’s Employee of the Month

Congratulations to Miriam Alaoma, Ward Manager on Maple Ward at University Hospital Lewisham who has been chosen as our Employee of the Month for November.

Grace Jimoh, Staff Nurse at University Hospital Lewisham, explained why she nominated her: “Miriam is a hands-on Ward Manager and leads by example in terms of patient care and staff morale. She is always supportive of her team clinically in providing care and support to our stroke patients.

“She consistently demonstrates calmness, professionalism and respect for others. She leads in a compassionate and inclusive way, which goes a long way in promoting staff wellbeing. Miriam inspires us by showing us what good nursing is.”

Jan Ferrari, Chair of the Lewisham Patient Welfare Forum, and Cynthia Oti, Matron for Stroke, congratulated Miriam and presented her with her certificate and a fruit basket donated by Hasan, who runs the fruit stall at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

A shocked Miriam said: “Leadership is leading by example and my motto is to always value and respect everyone. I feel so delighted, honoured and forever grateful to be thought of for this award. Thank you to this amazing Trust where I have worked for over 10 years. A special thanks to my Maple Ward family, for their amazing support and Matron Cynthia for your continuous leadership.”

Jan Ferrari, who chaired this month’s judging panel, commented: “The nominations this month were impressive, with many examples of staff going the extra mile for patients and colleagues. But Miriam Alaoma deserves to be Employee of the Month, as she clearly leads by example and is an inspirational nurse.”

Miriam’s proud manager Cynthia added: “I am pleased that Maple Ward staff recognised and appreciate Miriam’s commitment and hard work. Miriam is visible to her staff including the multidisciplinary team, patients and their families. Since becoming a new Ward Manager in March 2022, Miriam has achieved so much in improving patients’ experience, quality, and safety. I am so proud of her and well done Miriam.”
