May’s Employee of the Month

Congratulations to Marcel Okechukwu Eze, Emergency Department Technical Assistant (EDTA) at University Hospital Lewisham, who has been chosen as our Employee of the Month for May.

The Emergency Department Technical Assistants are part of our nursing team, supporting the registered nurses and providing direct care and assistance to our patients.

Olufemi Michael Adebayo, an Emergency Department Technical Assistant, explained why he nominated him: “Marcel is hardworking and an inspiration to all of us. He is a wonderful lead supporting our new healthcare assistants and newly qualified nurses and he goes above and beyond to ensure they are okay. He is the go-to guy, and he consistently finds time for us all. The patient is his top priority, and his standards of care are excellent.”

“Marcel initiated and actively participated in launching a new initiative called the Triage Assist in the Urgent Care Centre (UCC), where patients can be triaged swiftly and have their vital signs, ECGs, and blood samples taken to reduce the waiting times.

“Another initiative he worked on was the new ECG/Blood room, which has new printers and other equipment to facilitate an easy roll out of the new triage assist system in UCC. It ensures that patient lists can be managed effectively.

"Marcel is fantastic at what he does. He is an exceptional team player who is dedicated and patient-focused. He always goes above and beyond and is an asset to the Emergency Department."

Carol Spanswick, Matron in the Emergency Department (ED) at University Hospital Lewisham, congratulated and presented Marcel with a certificate and a fruit basket. Hasan Er, who runs the fruit stall at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, donated the fruit basket.

A speechless Marcel said: “I am humbled to receive the Employee of the Month award, which the Emergency Department team made possible. Everyone in the Emergency Department works incredibly hard to give our patients the best care possible, and we are always looking for ways to enhance our patient care. I am grateful to our Emergency Department management team for allowing us to each contribute in some way.”

Peter Barnes, Head of PTS South East London, HATS Group, who chaired this month’s judging panel commented: “The nominations were a delight to read. There was some fantastic feedback from your peers throughout the nominations. Marcel was chosen as the winner because of his innovation and creativity in processes within the Emergency Department. We can clearly see the benefits that a quicker triage can lead to and how it might enhance ED flow, benefiting Trust colleagues, ambulance staff, and patients and enhancing the service for all stakeholders, making him a deserving winner.

“Thank you for allowing us to be a part of the judging process. We enjoyed reading about all of the fantastic work being done by the Trust as a whole.”
