Emergency Department Matrons are August winners for Employee of the Month
Job sharing University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) Emergency Department Matrons, Carol Spanswick and Sarah Carver, are our joint employee of the month winners for August 2019. Receiving an incredible six nominations, Carol and Sarah were chosen as winners by this month’s judging panel, the Trust Joint Partnership Board including representatives of our staff-side trade unions.
Staff-side chair Mike Davey said: “I’d like to congratulate everyone who was put forward for this award; there were so many great stories that it was really hard to choose a winner. What shone through about Carol and Sarah was they are so highly regarded by all their team, and always make time to support their colleagues and create a team spirit in the UHL emergency department.”
Mike, along with Jo McCaffrey, Director of Operations, UHL Medicine and Community, surprised the matrons at a meeting today (Wednesday 28 August) and presented them with their certificates and fruit baskets generously donated by Hassan, who runs the fruit stall at UHL.
One of the staff who nominated Carol and Sarah Peris Gchanja, Practise Development Nurse in the Emergency Department - said: “Carol and Sarah are very approachable, they have an open door policy and make every member of staff feel welcome and comfortable.” Peris added: “Carol and Sarah work in unison. Many staff have verbalised how well the ED is run and there is a family feel of togetherness, and how lucky we are to have these two matrons as our leaders.”
Employee of the Month will be running throughout the year, and all entries all also put forward for the annual Trust staff awards, to be held in March 2020. Each month a different staff group will be the judging panel.
Also awarded at the annual Trust staff awards is a special prize for a Healthcare Hero nominated by patients and the public. Nominations for Healthcare Hero will open shortly and details of how to nominate staff at the Trust will be available soon on their website www.lewishamandgreenwich.nhs.uk.
