We provide an extensive radiology service to assist in the diagnosis of trauma and disease at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and University Hospital Lewisham. 

We see a range of patients referred to us from A&E, outpatient clinics, hospital wards and GPs.

All GP Imaging department reports are now sent electronically direct to the GP surgery.

Services available

We carry out a range of examinations for GPs and hospital medical staff:

  • General Radiology (regular x-rays)
  • Computed Tomography (CT) scans
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans
  • Ultrasound  

Our department has strict guidelines to ensure that the minimum radiation dose is given and keeps its equipment and staff up to date with the latest available technology.

How to get a referral

You can be referred to us by the Emergency Department, outpatient clinics, theatres, GPs, mental health organisations and other hospitals.

Change or cancel your appointment

Please let us know if you want to change or cancel your appointment by calling us on 020 8836 4734.

Alternatively, you can complete the online form and a member of our team will be in contact with you within three working days to confirm your cancellation or new appointment time as appropriate.

Please give us at least four days notice before any change or cancellation to allow us to reutilise the slot. If this is not possible, please call us on 020 8836 4734.

Walk-in x-ray service

We offer a walk-in x-ray service at University Hospital Lewisham for GP patients who require general examinations such as chest or spinal x-rays.

Patients do not have to book appointments and can be X-rayed on attending the radiology department at Lewisham.

Opening times:

Monday to Friday: 8.15 — 11.45 am and 2 — 4.15 pm

Patients will be seen on a first come, first served basis and waiting times will vary in the department depending on demand.

DEXA Scanning

DEXA scans are most commonly used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition where the bones become weak and fragile and more likely to break. They can also be used to assess the risk of osteoporosis developing.

A DEXA bone scan can also help detect other bone-related conditions, such as osteopenia, which is a condition where a person has very low bone mineral density, and osteomalacia, asoftening of the bones caused by a vitamin D deficiency.
