Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery

New operating theatre

We now provide a bariatric and metabolic surgery service at University Hospital Lewisham.

Our multidisciplinary team offer a one stop assessment with a consultant bariatric surgeon (Ms Cynthia Borg, Mr Midhat Siddiqui), a specialist nurse, a dietician and a consultant anaesthetist. We offer a full range of bariatric procedures including laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric banding. We also have a comprehensive post-operative follow-up pathway.

Who we can help

We can accept referrals for patients who fulfil the NICE and current commissioning guidelines. These are:

  • Patients aged 18 or over,
  • A BMI of 40 kg/m2, or BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2  if you have other conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, hypertension and benign intracranial hypertension
  • You have had a BMI of 30 or more for 5 years or more,
  • You have already complied with a specialist tier 3 or tier 4 non-surgical weight loss programme for a period of 12 months or more (BMI: 35-49).  If your BMI is over 50, the minimum period that you must have participated in a weight loss programme is six months.
  • You are willing to commit to a long-term follow up programme, and you have no history of drug or alcohol abuse or dependence

We ask that you have your fasting lipids and fasting glucose, FBC, U&E, creatinine, B12, folate, calcium and Vit D checked prior to being referred to us, and that your referral includes your test results.
