The Jade Room

The Jade Room on the Maternity Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital is a dedicated, calming space for families grieving the loss of a baby. Named after Jade, who was stillborn 27 years ago, the room was created thanks to the determination of Kim Bailey, a mother who wanted to improve support for bereaved families. After her own heart-breaking experience with Jade, of being placed on a busy postnatal ward with no private space, Kim campaigned and raised funds to establish this special room.

The Jade Room offers a quiet refuge away from the noise and activity of the delivery suite, allowing families to spend precious, undisturbed time with their baby. Recently refurbished with funding from the Charity 4Louis, the room now features comfortable seating, a TV, and toiletries. Adding to the room’s warmth, Butterfly Books 4 Baby Loss donated special books designed to be read to babies as part of the memory-making process, along with keepsakes for families to treasure.

Kim said: “Having the room named after Jade was such a lovely honour, and it’s wonderful to know that her name will live on for years to come. The space looks absolutely amazing so calming and relaxing, perfect for families who need it.”

Liz Ware, Specialist Bereavement Midwife at QEH, explained: “The Jade Room is talked about every day by colleagues on the delivery suite. Saying Jade’s name keeps her legacy alive. This room is crucial in providing compassionate bereavement care, a safe, private place for families during their darkest moments. With this refurbishment, LGT meets national bereavement care standards, and the positive impact on families will be invaluable.”

Thanks to Kim’s dedication, the Jade Room continues to provide comfort for families when they need it most.
