Nuclear medicine is moving

We are very excited to announce that we are opening a fantastic new Nuclear Medicine suite at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in October 2023. Once fully operational, all nuclear medicine appointments will move from University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) to QEH.

Our new spacious suite of nuclear medicine facilities is within the main Radiology Department at QEH on the ground floor, near the main hospital entrance. This location gives really good physical access for all our patients and is closer to home for the majority of patients who are referred to Nuclear Medicine.

Dr Fatima Shah, Consultant Radiologist says: “The state-of-the-art SPECT-CT camera we’ve installed means we will be able to scan more patients, more quickly, and this will reduce waiting times for patients who need these important tests.

“The new bigger Nuclear Medicine Department will enable us to offer a wider range of nuclear medicine examinations than we can currently offer at UHL. For example, we plan to restart offering specialist cardiac investigations in a specialist new exercise room. Being able to offer a great range of investigations will mean that our patients won’t have to travel to other hospitals further away. In planning this exciting new diagnostic and treatment facility, we have listened to patients and put them at the heart of everything we do.”

We’ve recruited a team of highly trained technologists to operate the new equipment and deliver the high standards of care we expect for our patients.

The move is carefully planned and all patients will be clearly notified if their next appointment will be in the new nuclear medicine suite at QEH.

By moving Nuclear Medicine to its fantastic new home at QEH we are freeing up space in the UHL Radiology Department to install a second dedicated CT scanner in Spring 2024. This will help us to greatly increase the number of CT scans we can do in Lewisham.
