New cardiac technology arrives at LGT
Patients at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT) are among the first in the UK to benefit from a new dual-energy ablation catheter, currently piloted in just three hospitals nationwide.
This advanced catheter allows specialists to switch between energy types during cardiac ablation, enhancing safety near sensitive structures and making procedures more efficient. A small number of patients at University Hospital Lewisham have already received the treatment, with more planned in the coming months.
Dr William Eysenck, Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at LGT and Royal Brompton Hospital, said: "It is fantastic that our local patients can benefit from this new technology. There are clear safety advantages, when ablating near vulnerable structures like the oesophagus, we can switch energy type to reduce risk. Having two energy options also increases efficiency, so we don't need to switch catheters during procedures.
"LGT's strong partnership with Royal Brompton Hospital has been key to bringing this state-of-the-art technology to our local patients."
