LGT launches world-first Gonorrhoea vaccinations

LGT Sexual Health Services launched its Gonorrhoea vaccination programme on Friday 1 August 2025. It is aimed at people with the greatest risk of acquiring this infection. The vaccine itself is not new but a tried and tested meningitis vaccine called 4CMenB. This programme is the first of its kind in the world.
Our first patient, who is also receiving HIV prevention treatment from us, is likely among the first in the country to be vaccinated as part of this programme. The vaccine was administered by Clinical Nurse Specialist Donna Ward.
Dr Stephen Kegg, Consultant in Sexual Health and HIV, said: "I am delighted that we have been able to offer gonorrhoea vaccination so quickly. Alongside established prevention measures such as HIV PrEP, and newer innovations such as DoxyPEP to help prevent syphilis infection, we are now able to work with our patients to reduce their risks of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections".
Dr Emily Mabonga, Consultant and Clinical Lead in Sexual Health and HIV, added: "It has been an excellent team effort from colleagues in pharmacy, contracts and the sexual health services to enable us to offer this to our patients on the launch of the programme. Go Team LGT!"
