June’s LGT Star of the Month

Congratulations to Shuvai Gumbo, Junior Sister on Ward 19 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), who has been named our LGT Star of the Month for June.

Nominated for the  Star Player Award, Shuvai was recognised for her compassion, dedication, and exceptional teamwork on the Elderly Care Ward at QEH. And here’s why:

"Shuvai was nominated for her compassionate approach to patient care and her unwavering support for colleagues. A team player, she consistently goes above and beyond to help those around her often stepping in to assist without being asked. Her resilience and dedication have had a powerful impact on both team morale and patient experience.

"One example of her compassionate care involved supporting a family through an extremely difficult time. Shuvai provided clear communication, emotional support, and comfort to relatives, ensuring they felt informed and cared for during a sensitive situation. Her kindness and professionalism made a lasting impression, with the family personally expressing their gratitude.

"Her ongoing support has made a meaningful difference to the success and wellbeing of the entire team on Ward 19. Shuvai's calm, compassionate communication and her ability to uplift her colleagues set a shining example of what excellent care looks like."

Shuvai was congratulated by her colleagues on Ward 19 and presented with a certificate, a £100 voucher from LGT, and a fruit basket generously donated by Hasan Er, who runs the fruit stall at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

A surprised Shuvai said: “I am honoured and humbled to receive the LGT Star Award. Nursing is more than just a profession to me, it's a privilege, and one I am grateful to be part of every single day.

"I want to sincerely thank my incredible team, my mentors, Sister Loris and Matron Doris and my colleagues who continue to support and inspire me.

"This recognition is as much a reflection of all of you as it is of me. I encourage each of us to always remember that the patients we care for are at the heart of everything we do.

"Being acknowledged in this way reminds me that compassion, patience, and dedication make a difference. Thank you for this honour."

Jessie Gale, Vinci Facilities Manager and chair of this month’s judging panel, added:  “Shuvai has demonstrated exceptional courage and compassion. She consistently goes above and beyond her job responsibilities to support her team and others. The work she does is incredibly challenging, yet she manages it with grace and professionalism.”
