Improved QEH surgery day care unit

This morning, chief executive Ben Travis cut the ribbon for the official launch of our improved surgery day care unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).

Ben and chief nurse Angela Helleur thanked everyone involved in months of hard work and planning to establish the dedicated surgery day care unit. All the beds in the unit are now ring-fenced for patients to recover in the right environment after planned surgery.

Consultant colorectal surgeon Mr Paolo Sorelli and senior sister Tania Silvester spoke about how, in the past, beds in the surgery care unit had often been used for emergency patients when the hospital was busy. This then led to last minutes cancellations and delays for patients due to have planned surgery – which was frustrating for both patients and for our staff.

You can see a short interview with Paolo and Tania on our YouTube channel, as well as a more in-depth interview with Paolo and Tania.
