Working Together to Improve Local Healthcare

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust is a new Trust formed on 1 October 2013.

The Trust is responsible for hospital services at Lewisham Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Greenwich. The Trust also runs a range of NHS community services in Lewisham and some services at Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup.

Services are not changing following the merger, and patient appointments are unaffected.

The healthcare teams in Lewisham and Greenwich have many strengths and by building on these we can develop an organisation we will be proud of. We are committed to working with patients, GPs, partners and staff to improve services and meet the needs of local people.

How will this affect my appointment?

Your appointment will not be affected. Following the merger Lewisham Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital will continue to provide the same services. If you receive treatment at either hospital it will not be affected by the formation of the new Trust. We will also continue to run community services in Lewisham and to provide some services at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup.

What is happening with emergency and maternity services in Lewisham?

All services at Lewisham Hospital – including for maternity and emergency care – are running as normal. In July 2013, Government plans to downgrade Lewisham’s emergency and maternity services in two to three years’ time were overturned by the High Court, following a legal challenge by Lewisham Council and the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign.

The judicial review did not affect the formation of the new Trust, as there is clear distinction between service change and organisational change.

What about the financial situation?

The Department of Health and NHS commissioners are providing funding so Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust can provide safe and sustainable services. Services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital were previously
run by South London Healthcare NHS Trust, which had financial difficulties. Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust will not be inheriting historic debts and additional financial support is being provided for Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s PFI costs.

While Lewisham Healthcare NHS Trust had a good record of remaining within budget, the NHS faces challenges in the future which Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust will be better able to meet as a larger organisation.
