Stay away if you have norovirus or flu

Flu and norovirus (the winter vomiting bug) are around in the community at the moment. Both are highly contagious, so please help us to protect our vulnerable patients by staying away from our hospitals if you’re experiencing any of the symptoms listed below.

Both conditions are caused by viruses and there is no cure, so the best thing to do is to stay at home until you’re better – there’s no need to visit your GP. If you’ve had norovirus, please do not visit the hospital until you’ve been free of symptoms for 48 hours.

 Flu symptoms

  • a sudden fever – a temperature of 38C or above
  • aching body
  • feeling tired or exhausted
  • dry, chesty cough
  • sore throat
  • headache
  • difficulty sleeping
  • loss of appetite
  • diarrhoea or tummy pain
  • nausea and being sick

See NHS Choices for more information on flu.

Norovirus symptoms

  • suddenly feeling sick
  • projectile vomiting
  • watery diarrhoea

See NHS Choices for more information on norovirus.
