Two members of staff at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust’s Midwifery Team have been given national awards in recognition of excellence.Heidi Stone won the Student Midwife of the year award at the recent British Journal of Midwifery (BJM) Awards, whilst Helen Knower, Head of Midwifery at the Trust, was runner up in the Midwifery Leadership category.
Heidi Stone is described by her colleagues as being a “true role model of what a student midwife of tomorrow should be”. A new mother commented that Heidi was “particularly kind and so generous with her time, even staying with us after her 12 and a half hour shift had finished so that she could help me breastfeed my first child. She will make a truly wonderful midwife”.
Over the last year, Heidi has devised a set of posters which show expectant mothers how their posture affects the three stages of labour, and describe a physiological approach to delivery without the routine use of drugs and common clinical interventions . These are now displayed around both the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) sites.
Helen Knower was shortlisted for the Midwifery Leadership for her outstanding leadership skills and the ability to nurture potential leaders while also maintaining high service standards.
Heidi said: “It means everything to me to be awarded Student Midwife of a year and I cannot wait to begin my career in a profession that I love, I just wish I had made the career change to become a midwife sooner! I am also excited to have the opportunity to write a monthly article for the BJM and share my thoughts on different topics in the midwifery world.”
Helen congratulated Heidi and said of her own nomination: “I am very flattered to have been nominated and shortlisted. Leading a maternity service has many challenges however a leader is only successful when the team they lead is great. At LGT we are fortunate to have an inspiring team of senior midwives who truly put the experience of women and their families at the centre of everything they do. I could not do my job without them.”
